10 things I’ve learnt
from organising
Auckland homes.

After organising hundreds of spaces, I have only become more certain of these things.

01

You do not need more space. You need less stuff.

You do not need more space. You need less stuff.

A bigger house will not fix a clutter problem.

02

The mental shift is often the hardest part.

The mental shift is often the hardest part.

So often my clients tell me they want to live in a house with less stuff. But when we start, they want to keep almost everything. The solution is to start small and do it consistently. Soon you realise how good it feels to clear the clutter.

03

The things you keep “just in case” are costing you more than you think.

The things you keep “just in case” are costing you more than you think.

They take up valuable space and make everything else harder to find.

04

Clutter is a postponed decision.

Clutter is a postponed decision.

That pile is not random. It is usually a decision you have not made yet.

05

The things you avoid dealing with are often the things draining you the most.

The things you avoid dealing with are often the things draining you the most.

The pile you keep walking past. The returns in the car. The cupboard you do not want to open. Dealing with it often takes five minutes and makes you feel lighter almost instantly.

Bowls, plates and cups arranged on a table with folded cloths.

06

Putting things away has to be easy.

Putting things away has to be easy.

If it is annoying to put something away, it probably will not happen. Remove the hurdles.

07

Give loose things a home.

Give loose things a home.

Ten loose things look like clutter. The same ten things together in a basket look organised.

08

The less you own, the less you have to manage.

The less you own, the less you have to manage.

Everything you own creates a little bit of work. It has to be stored, cleaned, moved, remembered and eventually dealt with.

09

The goal is not to have a perfect house all the time. It is to have a house that is easy to reset.

The goal is not to have a perfect house all the time. It is to have a house that is easy to reset.

A house that is lived in will get messy. That is normal. Good organising means you can put it back together quickly.

10

Decluttering changes the way you shop.

Decluttering changes the way you shop.

Once you have spent time getting rid of things you never really needed, you become much more conscious of what you bring back into the house.
